No to child marriage. Yes to girls’ education and protection. With this position, we join the world in marking the International Day of the Girl, which the United Nations has dedicated this year to the theme “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights”.
A girl belongs in school, with a pencil in her hand, not a ring. Child marriage takes away a girl’s childhood, education and health, and deprives her community of her potential and her dreams.
Since 1999, we have worked with families and communities in 15 states across Sudan so that every girl can stay in school, safe and protected. In the areas where we work, our programmes include:
- Protecting children from harm, including child marriage
- Education in emergencies, and literacy and numeracy classes for girls
- Safe spaces for women and girls, and girls’ clubs
- Psychosocial support
- Health care and nutrition for children and mothers
- Community awareness of children’s rights and protection
Investing in girls today is investing in the future of all of Sudan. To learn more about our protection and education work, visit our Programmes page.
