Over coffee sessions in Shagarab refugee camp in Kassala State, women and girls sat with our team and with UNICEF’s Chief of Child Protection, and spoke openly about the protection services they receive and what they actually need.
The sessions were part of a field visit organised by our Kassala office in cooperation with the Commission for Refugees in the state. The visit included the child-friendly spaces and the safe spaces for women and girls in the camp.
The discussions covered preventing gender-based violence, raising awareness of the harms of female genital mutilation, and the Saleema approach to protecting girls’ dignity and health.
The two teams reviewed the project’s results in 2025, assessed the quality of services for children and families, and identified gaps that need a stronger response. The priorities from the visit will feed into the workplan for the next phase.
These activities are part of our joint project with UNICEF, “Strengthening Child Protection and Access to Specialised Essential Services for Children on the Move and the Most Vulnerable Children in Host Communities in Kassala State”.
